Give Me Something

Give Me Something

The Black 80s is the collaborative pairing of two reputable artists in the house scene, namely, veteran Hollis P Monroe (Ovum / Keinemusik) and newcomer Overnite (Suol / Noir Music). Here they deliver Give Me Something via the forever on-point Air London imprint. The duo, equally contribute to the instrumental and vocal aspects of their work: co-creating concepts, co-writing lyrics and co-composing grooves for their music. Following releases as Hollis P Monroe & Overnite, the duo now solidify The Black 80s guise, which represents a sound, which at times tends to be blacked out from our memories when reminiscing. Here the production team join the Air London roster alongside the likes of Session Victim and Jordan Peak, a starting point so to speak for their movement towards live shows together and larger album projects under this newly formed alias. The release kicks off with the Overnite Mix of Give Me Something, embracing a classic house aesthetic with raw 808 style rhythms, emotive melodies and soul-laden vocal lines. Overnite keeps things relatively smooth and precise, tightly blending an amalgamation of pads and arpeggiated synth lines to drive the musicality, while structurally things evolve with a progressive template. The latter half of the release features Hollis P Monroes mix of Give Me Something, taking on a retro inspired vibe with deep, cosseting organ stabs, heady shuffling drums and the storytelling vocals. The focal point of the cut sees the melodic elements blossom and variations in the drum programming further fuel the groove.
