Moog & Nylon

Moog & Nylon

Tom Caufield's latest album, 'Moog & Nylon' features seven dialogues between the nylon string guitar, which came of age during the Renaissance, and the Moog analog synthesizer, which was developed through the '50s and mid '60s, and became popular with adventurous musicians soon after the Summer of Love. Dualities are explored as the organic meets the electronic in this absorbing collection. Building on his rural, contemplative style, with this collection Caufield weaves in the wiggly with the structured, and mixes the wooden with the synthetic, the human with the machine, the everyday with the transcendent, ancient with retro-futuristic, the cerebral with the emotional, the biological with the synthetic, expresses inner space, outerspace, the tangible and virtual the earthbound and the cosmic, but mostly modern life's predominate feature: the ubiquitous presence of technology. Observing a Wabi Sabi aesthetic, which instructs artists to emulate nature, the music conveys a sense of spiritual longing and aching beauty, feels complete yet somehow unfinished, is simple on the surface but complex in detail, rough edged and open ended. One here's hints of Santana, Segovia, Gilmour and Clapton in the guitar work as well as Wakeman, Zawinul, and the Ozrics in the synth work. Caufield strives for the unfinished, suggestive phrasing of Weather Report's Wayne Shorter in his phrases, letting the melodies hint at meaning rather than overstate them. Not quite ambient, but more contemplative and hypnotic than soft pop and jazz, Caufield's music induces calm while providing a space to think. It's relaxing, yet engaging. "Music is the harmonization of opposites, the unification of disparate things, and the reconciliation of warring elements. It brings together and unites." - The Pythagoreans Sublime stuff. Music that will pull you in, take you hostage, and sweep you away. Immerse yourself in 'Moog & Nylon.'
