Take Your Dance Into Battle
"Take Your Dance Into Battle," originally recorded in 1991, was the title song of Freddie Bryant's first CD released only in Japan. Upon hearing the CD Kenny Burrell wrote "Freddie Bryant is a brilliant young guitarist and composer.” Long out of print it is finally being released two months before Freddie's latest CD, "Live Grooves...Epic Tales" comes out. In celebration of the new CD Freddie is releasing one song a week from his first CD until Oct. 23rd, 2012 the release date of "Live Grooves...Epic Tales." Be sure to check out and download each new release recorded by a top notch NYC band of young musicians at the time who are now celebrated leaders in their own right and sidemen to scores of the major artists in jazz for the last twenty years: Steve Wilson (Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Joe Henderson, Maria Schneider, George Duke, Mulgew Miller), Don Braden (Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Haynes, Tony Williams), Ira Coleman (Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Brandford Marsalis, Tony Williams, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sting) and Billy Drummond (Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Christian McBride, Chris Potter). Freddie has been keeping busy in the 21 years since this recording and has played, toured and/or recorded with Tom Harrell, Max Roach, Ben Riley's Monk Legacy Septet, The Mingus Orchestra, Randy Brecker, Kevin Hays, Brad Mehldau, the King of AfroPop - Salif Keita, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sheila Jordan and Eliane Elias. Over the years his bands have featured the likes of Josh Redman, Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Claudio Roditi and many others. Originally a modern jazz enthusiast who also immersed himself in classical guitar, with a masters degree from the Yale School of Music Freddie discovered the joys of Brazilian music around the time of "Take Your Dance..." Subsequently his CDs reflected this new-found music played on his classical guitar, a perfect match for his background that was also reflected in his compositions seen on his three CDs for the Fresh Sound label. Rhythm was always a heavy influence in his music. Yes his music has rich harmonies and beautiful melodies but rhythm infused it all sprouting from his keen love and understanding of the African heritage - the root of the music in the New World. So Brazilian music was not the endpoint of his journey. As you will see from his first recording and his soon to be released "LIve Gooves...Epic Tales" his music reflects the African diaspora and also is open to explorations of Cuban, South American, Indian, Middle-Eastern, Flamenco sounds and rhythms as well as a deep foundation in the Blues and Spirituals and love for Gospel music and Funk...in short his music GROOVES! It grooves at the same time as it revels in Jazz's main gift to American music - spontaneous improvisation. It balances the excitement of unchained individual creativity over a thoroughly thought-out compositional design that, in the tradition of Duke Ellington, is inspired by his players and also his love for drama and meaning and power in music that was instilled in him by his performing parents and composing brother (35 years his senior). THE NEXT SONG from "Take Your Dance Into Battle" to be released as part of this celebration leading to soon to be released "Live Grooves...Epic Tales" will be "NERUDA."
